I talked to Dad today and he is moving along with life as best he can with the new situation with Patty. He is strong and organized and knows how to make life go. Then he put Patty on the phone and within seconds of hearing her voice, I realized how dramatic a shift Patty has taken. I've never know anyone with Alzheimer's. I felt sad, very sad. I miss her already. I also realized how Dad's friend and confidant is really now missing from his life. "At least she's happy" he says to me. But I want to make sure Dad is happy too. I can tell how much it means to him to hear our voices.
So here is my proposal:
Call Dad--once a week, once a month-- and make it a habit, a regular event. Mark your calendar so you don't forget. It is SO important. He needs us.
